Hundreds of volunteers took part in a "Don't Eat Dogs and Cats" campaign in southwestern China's Chongqing municipality Sunday Morning.
Since some people have the habit of eating dogs and cats in mid-winter, Chongqing Small Animal Protect Association (CQSAPA) organized the activity to talk people out of the cruelty and treat the animals friendly.
Being interviewed by the local Chongqing Times, Chen Ming, director of CQSAPA, said that 53% of families in the city have pet cats or dogs at present. These animals are friends of us human beings, thus it is unbelievable that some people would eat them!
Chen also said that although volunteers can't force people to stop eating dogs and cats, at least they can advise and influence people through this publicity.
He added, lots of people consider eating dog and cat meat good for their health, however, most of those meat are not checked by local authorities and might have hidden safety issues.
During the campaign, attendees arranged exhibition boards and sent leaflets to promote the theme. They also sang a song named "The Direction of Warmness", which drew applause from passers-by.
The campaign had five meeting places and lasted until five o'clock in the afternoon.
Moreover, Animals Asia Foundation, an non-governmental organization dedicated to the improvement of the lives of all animals in Asia, is preparing for a large-scale movement, covering 30 Chinese cities, to appeal to everyone to protect small animals.
