Some people believe that the flesh water will never be used up. Because people can get flesh water from the rains, from the rivers, from the wells and from me lakes. It seems that we have sufficient fresh water to use.
But as a matter of fact, the earth is in great shortage of fresh water. Many factories send out a large number of. poisonous waste into the rivers and lakes and cause serious pollution of the fresh water. And because of the rapid increase of the world's population, there is a continuously rising demand of flesh water. In fact, in some big cities, fresh water can not meet the people's daily need.
Now it’s time for us to do something to solve this problem. First, we must take efficient steps to make our water clean. Then we must let everyone understand the dangerous situation he is in. For there is no water, there is no human beings.
My View on Job-Hopping (June 97 CET-6)
"You resigned again! What's your new job?..." Job-hopping has become a hot topic among people, especially the young and heated debates focus on it as a result.
Many people are inclined to do one job in their lives. In their opinions, people who change their job frequently are superficial and tactless. They believe that the only way to success is to stick to one job, for constant practice in a professional field helps make an expert.
But there are still many people who won't agree. They argue that change means progress. If you're not satisfied with your present job, of course you have the right to replace it with .a more challenging and better paid one. Every change is a step to further success. This idea may be the reason why they change their jobs so often.
For my part, I think it reasonable to chance your job if you have a better opportunity. But once you have found a position where you can fully display your ability, you'd better settle down and put down your whole heart into it. Only in this way can you get the true joy of achieving your goals.
Everyone's attitude towards job is different. Some people think they will do one job until retirement. They often say like this: Take up one thing like it and be Good at it. They think only when they are absorbed in one work can they do it well.
On the contrary, some other people like to change their jobs at times. In their opinions, the aim of doing a job is only to get more money. So, when they have a chance to get a more well-paid job, certainly they caught to get hold of the chance.
My view an Job-Hopping is m the middle of the points above. I think if I have a job that really fits me, I’ll do it all my life. Any other job can’t attract me no matter what the benefit it is. But if I can’t have a proper job, I’ll change it until I find a satisfactory job.
In a word, I want to find a job that fits me money and other things are out of thought.
Haste Make Waste (CET-6 97.1)
There is an old saying “Haste makes waste.” It’s the experience of our forefathers, however, it is correct in many cases even today.
Usually, if you act faster, you can reach your goals earlier. But it isn't always the case. If you emphasize only on speed but ignore the quality of your work you will get the opposite effect. The more hasty you are, the slower you achieve completeness and success. In short, haste makes
waste.
Assume that you are preparing for your final examination. There are a lot of exercises to do and many notes to remember. The fact that you have no enough time makes you very worried. So you read and write continuously, without rest, without sleep, without relaxation. The result is that your brain is less and less efficient, your process is slower and slower. The situation goes from bad to worse. All your efforts lead to nothing.
On the contrary, if you do your preparations with a calculation plan and carry out the plan step by step, your work will be effective. Consequently, you will take part in the exams confidently with good preparations.
Whatever you do, please remember the saying ---“Haste makes waste”. If you understand it and apply it to your study or work, you’ll necessarily benefit a lot from it.
“Haste makes waste.” Most of us think so. But why? Have your ever thought of this problem? We can’t think of many examples in your real life.
For example, if you are a bus driver and for some reasons, you have been delayed. Under such condition, you may feel anxious and want to hurry up. So you drive fast and of course you may neglect the most important thing ----safety. And many accidents happen in such situation. Most probably, you may crash into cars and the result is very obvious.
If you are a student, “Haste makes waste” may be always taught from your teacher, especially when you are taking examination, just like me now. Keeping quiet and reading the paper carefully is the most important thing. Time limited, you may feel anxious, and then you may be disturbed by
yourself. Under such circumstances you may fail in the exam.
In a word, whatever we do, we must keep in mind: more haste, less speed. It teaches us to do things step by step, not to hurry.
Getting to Know the World Outside the Campus (June 97 CET-4)
With the rapid development of our society, the campus is no longer an “ivory Tower". Students must get in touch, with the world outside the campus so that they can adapt themselves to the society more quickly when they graduate.
Almost all the students keep themselves informed by TV, radio broadcasts and newspapers. Some of them even take up a part-time job in their spare time, working as tutors, serving in some fast-food restaurants ---. All these have kept the students get in touch with the society.
Now the summer vacation will come and I've already found myself a job--working as a typist in an office. I've learned typing for many years and I think I can do it well. It’s a good chance for me to get to know the society, to learn how to get along with my colleagues and to see how my knowledge is put into practice. When the next semester begins, I’ll still try to get this kind of little job. Regardless of the pay; I think the most important thing is that I can really know a lot about the society., ,
It is important for the students to know the world outside the campus. Now the society is developing quickly. We have to adapt us to the society. After graduating, we must find a job to support ourselves. And we must know what kind of people the society requires.
To know the world outside the campus, we can read newspapers, watch TV and listen to the radio. We can also get to know the society through taking part in serving for the society. And we can exchange information with our classmates and friends.
According to me, I will try my best to study well firstly. And then I plan to find a job in the Summer Holidays. I think I will be a salesman or a clerk during the holidays. It will help me to know the world outside the campus.
Practice Makes Perfect (CET-4 97.1)
It is a famous saying that practice makes perfect. The truth of it is self-evident. The more you practice, the more skillful you will be. Moreover, you will find better ways of doing things. As everyone can see, practice helps us to be efficient.
When we study English, we have so much to learn, such as grammar, vocabulary. In order to learn it well, we need much practice. We must read a lot, write a lot and listen to a lot. Only through practice can we have a good command of it. Do remember to practice if you want to speak English fluently and express yourself freely.
Another case in point is typing. A good typist can type fast and accurately. But you will not be surprised at her performance if you know how much time she has spent practicing. Through practice, she has both her typing speed and accuracy to be improved.
It goes without saying that practice makes perfect. Since all of us have realized the importance of practice, why not put it into practice?
There is a good saying in China: Practice makes perfect. That is to say, when we learn a skill, we should practice it from time to time, and thus we will gradually master it and do it perfectly.
For example, English study requires reading, listening, speaking and writing. In a word, it needs much practice every day. If you want to improve your listening comprehension ability, you must listen to the tape frequently. Then after a short time, you will find you can catch what was said. Keep up it, you will improve it greatly.
Practice leads to perfect.. To master almost every skill, you can't but practice. If you want to become a singer, you could not always listening to the others’ song. You should practice by yourself under the direction of a teacher. Diligence and hard work leads to success. If you encounter difficulty, in your study, don't be discouraged. Keep up it, remember, practice makes perfect.

1. World Population
Population Control
Progress in science and the improvement of living conditions have led to the rapid growth of the world population. Modern medicine, for example, has make it possible for babies grow up healthily and for people to live longer. With improved living conditions, particularly in the countryside, people tend to have large families. As a result, the world population has increased so rapidly that it has now exceeded 6 million.
But the overgrowth of population presents a threat to the existence of human society. A large population demands a great deal of food supply and shelter space. However, the limited productivity and scarce world resources can hardly meet the need of ever-increasing population. Thus, in the long run, the overgrowth of the world population will only harm mankind. To guarantee the steady development of human society, mankind must realize the consequences resulting from a fast population growth and carry out a family planning program. Only by adopting effective measures can human society develop steadily and have a bright future.
2. Please write a composition based on the table given.
1980 1985
Income $12,000 $16,000
Expenses Food 18% 22%
Housing 25% 32%
Medical 10% 12%
Entertainment 7% 7%
Savings 5% 5%
Others 35% 23%
2. The Average Family Income and Expenses in US
The table shows the average income and expenses in the United States in 1980 and in 1985.
In 1980, the average income was distributed in the following way: 18% was spent on food, 25% on housing, which accounted for most of the family expenditure, 10% on medical expenses, 7% on entertainment and 5% went to savings in the bank. The remaining 35% was channeled to other family expenses.
In 1985, the picture was slightly different. With the total family income increased to $16,000 per year, the percentage of average income spent on food, housing and medical care also took an upward turn. The percentage of money for entertainment remained the same, while the percentage of money put to other uses dropped from 35% to 23%.
It can be concluded from the above table that when people have higher income, they tend to spend more on food, housing and medical care and thus increase the standard of their lives.
3. Car Accidents Declining in Walton( 1991.6 )
(1) Rise and fall of the rate of car accidents as indicated by the graph;
(2) Possible reasons for the decline of car accidents in the city;
(3) Your predictions of what will happen this year.
You should quote as few figures as possible.
The number of car accidents in Walton city fluctuated during the year of 1990. It increased in the first three months and decreased in the following three months. After that, the number of car accidents went up again. In August, the number reached the top. Since then, car accidents had been reduced remarkably. There were only 16 car accidents in December.
There are several reasons for the decline of car accidents in the city. First, some new roads were built and some narrow streets were widened, which reduced the flow of the traffic. Second, a new traffic law was made and came into force. The new traffic regulations laid down in the law are more strict than the old ones. Third, the city administration strengthened the education of keeping the traffic rules. People, especially drivers realized the importance of keeping the rules.
From the rise and fall of car accidents in the graph, we can predict that the rate of car accidents will go on falling because the new measures afford some guarantee. ( 173 words )

ii. Give possible reason for the changes;
iii. Draw your own conclusions
You should quote as few figures as possible.
As we can see from the table, great changes have taken place in people’s diet over the period from 1986 to 1990. While more and more high-nutrition food such as milk, meat are consumed by people, grain, once the main or even the only food for Chinese people, the amount of its consumption is continuously decreased.
Such changes in people’s diet should owe to the following reasons. 5. Health Gains in Developing Countries ( 1990.6 )
1. 以下图为依据描述发展中国家的期望寿命(life expectancy)和婴儿死亡率(infant mortality)的变化。
2.说明引起变化的各种原因。
( a )It can be seen from the graph that health gained a lot in developing countries from 1960 to 1990. Their life expectancy increased 20 years, while the infant mortality decreased 10%.
Why were there such great changes during the 30 years? In my opinion, there are mainly three reasons. First, compared with 1960, people in developing countries received better medical care in 1990, and there were more hospitals, more doctors, and nurses. In addition, the advances in medical technology equipped most of the hospitals with modern instruments and effective medicine. Second, the importance of seeing a doctor was realized by more and more people. When they felt ill, they would go to see the doctor. Finally, with the development of science and technology, people’s standard of living improved a lot. They could afford to buy nutritious food to keep fit.
In conclusion, with the better medical care , strong awareness of health and higher standard of living, people’s health in developing countries is improving from generation to generation.
( b ) According to figures given in the table, we can find that in the past thirty years, the life expectancy rose a lot while the infant mortality obviously declined in the developing countries. In 1960, the life expectancy was only 40, but in 1990, it reached to 60. At the same time, the infant mortality decreased from the 20% in 1960 to the 10% in 1990.
We should say that this is a miracle the developing countries made on their way to improve people’s health….( omitted)
We believe that as the development of the whole world, people in the developing countries will become more and more healthy.
6. The Changes in China’s Foreign Trade
With the fast growing economy, China has witnessed booming foreign trade in the past two decades. As we can see from the chart, before 19768, the foreign trade increased at a slow and steady rate. Because at that time China stuck to the policy of “ self-reliance” and mainly traded raw materials and traditional goods for industrial equipment. What’s more, the hostility between China and the western countries also held free trade between China and those industrialized nations in check(= prevented).
However, after 1978, high-technology and advanced administration were introduced in order to accelerate the process of modernization in China. China is now capable of providing the world market with a variety of high-quality products. Foreign trade, as an important factor of economy, has been dramatically increasing. Thanks to the “opening-up” policy, especially the opening of many coastal cities to overseas investors, foreign investment and advanced technology have flowed in. Joint ventures and private companies have flourished everywhere in China. Cultural exchange and the co-operations in many fields have promoted the mutual understanding between China and other countries. China has enjoyed the prosperity more encouraging than ever before.
