Bank Of Amer Reduction Equivalent To 9%-10.5% Of Work Force

Bank of America Corp. (BAC) expects to eliminate 30,000 to 35,000 positions over the next three years as it absorbs New York securities firm Merrill Lynch & Co. (MER), the equivalent of 9-10.5% of the companies' combined workforce.

A final number won't be ready until early 2009, Bank of America said. The cuts will come from both companies and 'affect all lines and staff units, 'the Charlotte, N.C. bank said in a press release, but specific cities where the cuts could be made haven't been determined, the company added.

Bank of America expects to close on its purchase of Merrill Lynch by Jan. 1.

The bank said the reductions reflect 'redundancies' created by the Merrill acquisition and the 'current recessionary environment.'
